Blog It Now: An inspiring podcast with Shawna Bowen, M.A., LISAC about positive, alternative methods to help our at-risk youth

Whether or not you have children, you will be inspired by the work of Shawna Bowen, a licensed independent substance abuse counselor who works in Cottonwood, Arizona and counsels at-risk youth, ages 14-17.  She recently completed a 10-CD series entitled "Things parents need to know if your child is using drugs." This series contains what she has learned over the past 10 years and has ever wanted to tell a parent who has a child doing drugs.  The CDs contain candid, open motivational presentations about parent denial, disease of addiction, and a live audience of parents listening to her presentations and talking about the "yeah, buts", including a discussion about what has worked.  The series was made to be very real with parents actually dealing with the situation.

Shawna's alternative counseling style includes regular viewings of movies from the spiritual cinema such as What the Bleep, The Secret, Celestine Prophecy, as well as the Pursuit of Happyness.  Quoting Carolyn Myss, Shawna states that kids are just starving for the sacred.  You know the work Shawna is doing is making a great impact when an at-risk youth tells her that the three hours he spends with his counseling group is the best time of his week.  That is just amazing.  And stay tuned for the last 20 minutes of the podcast where Shawna tells us about her incredible "Secret" story.  You won't want to miss it!
